Does Your Makeup Have a Shelf Life?

Does Your Makeup Have a Shelf Life?

Does your makeup have a shelf life? It does.

For every health and beauty product you used this morning, there are probably five others sitting idle in your medicine cabinet, with expiration dates going as far back as the last time you listened to music on a cassette tape.

There are a number of reasons to do a sweep of outdated products — are you really going to wear that blue eyeshadow again? We know how much you love that perfect pink shimmer lipstick. Or the eyeliner that's been sharpened down to no more than a nub.

But there comes a point when you have to let go and accept the reality that your favorite beauty products eventually become breeding grounds for bacteria.

There is one caveat to this rule: pure mineral makeup. What makes it pure mineral makeup? No added fillers,

Here's how to know what's still good and what's past its prime:

  • Eyeliner: 12-24 months
  • Liquid Eyeliner: 3-6 months
  • Mascara: 3 months
  • Eyeshadow: 12-18 months
  • Foundation: 12 months
  • Tinted Moisturizer: 12 months
  • Lipstick + Lip Pencil: 12-18 months
  • Lipgloss: 18 months
  • Blush: 18-24 months
  • Powder: 24 months

These guidelines on when to toss what products can protect you from bacteria that can potentially grow and help make sure you always have safe, effective products.
