WTF is Aquafaba? You’ve been dumping this stuff down the drain for years, but now some inventive chefs cooks have discovered it’s actually a miracle ingredient. Yep, we’re talking about chickpea water. As in, the cloudy liquid that sits in your can of chickpeas. No, we're not joking.
Aquafaba works in literally anything you’d use eggs for—cakes, cookies, meringue—and even mayo! So, we took to our test kitchen and whipped up a few DIY beauty recipes using Aquafaba. We've found it's awesome for combination or oily skin and enlarged pores and works wonders on blemishes.
The key to success -- whip it, whip it good! While whipping chickpea water may not seem intuitive, it actually works well enough to create fluffy meringues and mousse. (Who knew, right?) When you whisk it (on high) for about 10 minutes, it starts to bind together—the same way egg whites do—and the goods you’re left with are light and airy.
Nature's complexion clean-up crew clears the way for skin to act its best. Aquafaba acts like a magnet to draw out pore-cloggers, clay absorbs environmental toxins, and tea tree oil dissolves impurities. It helps flush out environmental toxins, dirt, and debris that can clog pores and cause skin to look overcast—leaving the complexion clarified and refreshed.
Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Whip on high for five to ten minutes, until peaks form (like a meringue).
Remove all makeup and wash your face. Scoop out 1 tbsp of mask and apply to face. Massage into skin in small circles and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse well with lukewarm water and pat dry with a paper towel.
If used twice a week, mask will last you about 2 weeks. Keep refrigerated.
